SAFETY & CONTRAINDICATIONS

Safety and Contraindications Relating to Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has an excellent safety record and is generally very safe. Serious adverse
reactions are rare, particularly at lower dosages below 2 ATA. Our chambers operate at pressures of 1.1 ATA, 1.3 ATA, and 1.5 ATA

Absolute Contraindications
Untreated Pneumothorax (collapsed lung)
Relative Contraindications
Current Upper Respiratory Infections
Chronic Sinusitis or Sinus Problems
Inability to Equalize Pressure in your ears or sinuses
- Severe Emphysema with CO2 retention
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) or other breathing problems
Pregnancy

Considerations and Risks
Severe Lung or Heart Disease: Potential risk of fluid buildup in the lungs.
Uncontrolled Diabetes: Risk of blood sugar dropping too low if HBOT is combined with an overdose of diabetic medication.
History of Seizures or Uncontrolled Fever: Increased risk of exacerbating seizure activity, especially if blood sugar levels are low.
Changes in Vision are rare and usually temporary, associated with prolonged exposure to higher pressures (2 ATA and above). Changes may include temporary myopia (worse distance vision) or presbyopia (worse vision for seeing up close), which typically resolve within three months after discontinuing sessions.
Cataracts: While HBOT does not cause cataracts, it may accelerate the maturation of pre- existing cataracts.
Pregnancy: Due to limited research, HBOT is generally avoided during pregnancy.
Current Upper Respiratory Infections and Sinus Problems: If you have a current upper
respiratory infection, chronic sinusitis, or sinus issues, it may affect your ability to equalize pressure in your ears; potentially spread the infection to others. Please reschedule your session once you have recovered.
Claustrophobia: Clients with claustrophobia can still attend HBOT if feel comfortable to do so. Our staff will assist you in getting used to the chamber and may tailor the protocol to suit your needs. If you feel uncomfortable in confined spaces,
please inform us.

Common potential Side Effects and Adverse Reactions
Ear/Sinus Discomfort: Occurs in approximately 10% of cases during pressurisation. Our staff will monitor you to ensure your comfort and safety. Please inform them immediately if you experience any discomfort or pain. Taking extra time and making routine stops can help reduce discomfort.

Dizziness or Light-headedness.
Medication Interactions: Please consult your doctor regarding any medical conditions or medications, as some may interact with HBOT.

Important Pre-Treatment Information
Please inform us each time you are due for HBOT if:
There has been any change in your health or medical condition. Seek advice from a doctor or a medical professional if unsure about attending.
You are taking medications that may affect your treatment.
You have a battery-operated medical device (e.g. hearing aids); please check with the
manufacturer or your doctor to confirm whether it can be taken into an hyperbaric oxygen chamber.

Safety Precautions During Treatment
Ear Pressure Management: If you experience ear pain, inform staff immediately so they can adjust the pressurisation rate, they will also guide you how to equalise the pressure in your ears.
Flying Precaution: Avoid flying for at least 24 hours after HBOT.
Electronic Devices: Clients are not permitted to bring electronic devices (e.g., mobile
phones, tablets, laptops)
Sharp Objects and Flammables: These items should not be taken into the chamber.

Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or queries. We are looking forward to meeting you in our centre.
